Love them. Plus, they (1) sampled Kraftwerk, and (2) had Brian Eno play on the album. Thumbs up.

If you added an "i" to then end of Chris Martin & Gwenyth's baby, she'd be Apple Martini. That's just wrong.
That's actually the highest review I've seen anyone give this album. Of course, I don't take music criticism all that seriously, and let's face it, it's really chic right now to rip Coldplay. I don't know where I'd rank it in relation to the other albums, but "X & Y" seems more.......contemplative, especially the first album. I think the last four or five tracks are really blah, outside of "Twisted Logic." "Speed of Sound" is the worst single they've ever released I think, but I don't think it's the worst song on "X & Y." Maybe that speaks volumes for what I think of the album as a whole.
I'd probably give it a :3stars:. The songs I do like off of it I really like.

Elliott Smith - Either/Or -
I had already listened a lot to From a Basement on the Hill, and loved it, so decided to try this earlier Smith. Well, it's Elliott Smith - what more do I need to say. The man was a genius. Endless relistenability value.
I'm the one guy on the face of the Earth, apparently, that thinks "Either/Or" is his weakest effort. It's just devoid of something I can't really put my finger on. It's just Elliott Smith imitating Elliott Smith.
"From a Basement on the Hill" on the other hand is awesome. I listened to it probably 50 times before putting it on the shelf after I first got it. The melodies and instrumentation on that album are unreal.

My review is above.

Image
:4.5stars:
What can you say? Typical Police greatness here. "Walking on the Moon" is one of my favorite songs of all time, and "Bring On the Night" and "Bed's Too Big Without You" rival it as the best song on the album.
I took off a half star only because I don't think it gets off to a nice, kickstart.

Image
:3stars:
It's decent. I bought it because it was on sale and I liked what I heard from them. It gets very repetitive very fast, however.

Image
:1.5stars:
I feel like I've been kkaaaaaaaahhhhhhhned. The two songs I heard from this that made me buy are the only two songs I care to ever listen to again. This is rubbish.

Image
:5stars:
This baby's worth all the hype it's getting. In fact, seeing AF live is my only real temptation to drop $100+ to attend Austin City Limits. I've listened to it quite a bit since I bought it, so it's repetitive right now. I have no doubt it won't stay on my shelf long before the next time I put it in my player.

:3.5stars:
This was ok. I guess I was expecting a little more than your typcial mid-90's Nirvana/Bush crossover based on all the glorious reviews it received.
It's not bad; just more forgettable than I thought it would be. A mild disappointment.

I love this album. It's the only one of her albums I have so far, so I don't know how it compares to her other material. I'm not sure how I'd classify it, but it's a solid album with only a couple tracks that I skip with any regularity (and a few others that are so darn catchy I have to listen to them twice in a row). You can listen to clips of it on AMG or Amazon and see if it suits your taste.
You see, Hopsi, you don't know very much about girls. The best ones aren't as good as you probably think they are and the bad ones aren't as bad. Not nearly as bad.

Just got it (free). So I haven't spent much time on it yet. I'll let you know once I do.

:4stars: Loving this. Just don't want to burn it for my Mom, like I promised I would.

Image
:3stars: While my love of all things Barenaked normally extends to all of their various side projects, listening to the whole cd at once is a little wearying. Maybe it will do better in my Winamp rotation.

Sufjan Stevens - Come on feel the Illinoise :5stars:

So far, my favorite album of 2005. It is by turns beautiful and tragic, familiar and strange. Stevens is an exceptional composer and lyricist, and I can't wait to hear what he has to say about the other 48 states (FWIW, I gave his Michigan album :4stars:)

I don't know why I haven't gotten around to getting this. With your high recommendation, I definitely have to buy it soon. He's coming to town next month, so I'm hoping to catch that show.

The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema :3.5stars:
More of the same from the New Pornographers which means a lot of charming and insanely catchy pop songs. Carl 'A.C' Newman sure knows how to write a great hook. I'm not sure if it has much staying power though.

Mass Romantic >> Electric Version >> Twin Cinema, in my opinion. Twin Cinema is good, but doesn't hit the same highs as EV, and EV only hit them occasionally.

I'd put Twin Cinema ahead of Electric Version but both fall well short of Mass Romantic. Neko Case's vocals on the title track and especially "Letter From an Occupant" are just superb.

Buff - I checked out Sufjan Stevens on iTunes. I like what I've heard. (Yay, new music!) Would you recommend the Michigan or Illinois album first?

In other news, I'm waiting patiently for the new Sigur Ros album in September.

I'd go with Illinois first. Michigan is very good but never reaches the same level of exuberrance. Also, don't forget to check out Seven Swans. It has some great songs and some bitchin' banjo.

Illinois and Michigan are interchangeable. I don't think one is better than the other. I might like Michigan better because it doesn't have too many of his slower songs on there, which I don't think is his strong suit. There is a song called "Decatur" on Illinois that brings an instant smile to my face.

I find this funny, because Decatur is not the kind of town that brings an instant smile to one's face. But, it is one damn catchy song. Props for a clever rhyme in the lines "Stephen A. Douglas was a great debater/ but Abraham Lincoln was the Great Emancipator."

"John Wayne Gacy, Jr." gives me goose bumps every time I hear it; it's haunting. The music and vocals are sublime, but the lyrics are heartbreaking. This is a really beautiful album. It's not gimmicky like I'd worried. It truly feels like a good representation of the state -- the good, the bad, the quirky, the admirable. I swell with civic pride when I listen to it.

New Pornographers tour dates about three-fifths of the way down this page for those interested. Britt Daniel needs to get his ass and the rest of Spoon out to CA too.
