Well I was hoping get the drummer John "Stumpy" Pepys but due to a bizarre gardening accident he is no longer available. I will have to go for Dave Grohl, good drummer and hey if we lose a man in another accident this guy can cover for any member of my Band!

I'll take Tori Amos on piano. She's one of the best rock pianists ever; her playing is so expressive.

For drums, Ginger Baker and Dave Grohl were also on my short list, but I ruled them out since they've already been in bands with a couple of my other band members, so that wouldn't be very interesting. So, on drums...Brian Rosenworcel (A.K.A. Thundergod) from Guster. I really admire his talent. He's not only skilled on a traditional drum kit, but he can also go totally apeshit on percussion using nothing but his bare hands (and not just bongos, we're talking snares, cymbals, etc.). For example:

You see, Hopsi, you don't know very much about girls. The best ones aren't as good as you probably think they are and the bad ones aren't as bad. Not nearly as bad.

1 keyboard/2nd guitarist = This guy can do both Matt Bellamy

My band is complete, I actually think they would play rather well together.

Yeah, I know - been struggling with this last choice.

My original plan was to use this last choice on Christopher Dowd of Fishbone, who can play keyboards or guitar and writes terrific songs:

Image

When I started getting nervous about landing Cliff Burton I thought my backup might end up being John Norwood Fisher of Fishbone, so I started thinking about other keyboardists. Rick Wakemen, Keith Emerson and Ray Manzarek being on the board are hard to resist. Then I started thinking a little less linearly. I've been this close >< to selecting Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (the one on the right):

Image

But, while this could make for some interesting music, I've really been pulling together musicians who incorporate diverse musical styles, who have a healthy respect for the legacy of music and its history, and who are not ever in need of being the focal point of the band. Daft Punk meets these, but not in a way that is symbiotic with the rest of the group.

So, I think Keith Emerson exemplifies those criteria extremely well, and to pass him up would be folly (plus maybe I score some HR Giger cover art on the albums):

Image

Welcome to the band, Keith!
It's fun, it's healthy, it's good exercise. The kids will just love it. and we put a little sand inside to make the experience more pleasant.

Very well, for my Bass player, I had to go with someone I've enjoyed throughout the years, mostly thru his exceptional work with Peter Gabriel

on accordion.

I'm toying with band names -- "Al and the Apostles"? Maybe something to do with royal court seeing as I've got the King of Pop, Prince, a Knight (Sir Paul), and a Jester. Does Phil hold a title?

Imagine that.

Mr. Lennon will be doing vocals for my as yet unnamed band.
Another good take. My initial thought was to recreate the Beatles and add Weird Al if that helps.

So your band will change band members often?
I didn't really think these guys could last. I mean, how many years could you put up with Axl's shit?
Well, let's see

Not bad. Though I expected the answer "20 minutes."
If I had said "20 minutes", Smithee would have probably shown up with a chart like the one above.
I was out of town. Thanks for covering.

Duke
Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where, uh, Phil Collins's presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins, and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to "Land of Confusion". In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. "In Too Deep" is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as, uh, anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your ass. Phil Collins's solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like "In the Air Tonight" and, uh, "Against All Odds". Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word "artist." This is "Sussudio", a great, great song, a personal favorite.
It's such a fine line between stupid and clever.

I'm kicking myself for not adding Slash as my last pick, especially since I almost took him first overall. However, looking at my current line-up I feel like a much more interesting choice would be to add Mark Mothersbaugh on keyboard.

There may be better technical bassists still on the board but I figured with all the firepower in the band, I need someone who doesn't have to hog the limelight but can still lay down a tight, funky groove. And I needed some representation from my favorite band. So welcome aboard, Tina Weymouth:
